Hey Blossoms!

In today’s blog I am going to talk a bit about the process I go through with aftercare of my tattoos. This might not be the process other people go by, but this is how my dad taught me to look after my tattoos when I got my first one about 8 years ago. I’ve had a few since then and they have all turned out amazing and I couldn’t be happier with any of them!

So you are getting a tattoo, it’s awesome, slightly uncomfortable and even agony for some. Generally the last thing the tattoo artist would do is clean it up with soapy water, wrap it in glad wrap and tell you to keep it on there for about an hour before removing it. Then off you go, 10% tougher with a sick new tattoo, but then what do you do?

Well what I like to do is keep the glad wrap on for about an hour, take it off and wash it with warm soapy water again. It will generally sweat under the glad wrap and for some it might even bleed. Make sure it is nice and clean then pat dry with a clean towel. Now in the healing stage it is best to always keep your tattoo moist and not let it dry out.

There are plenty of things you can apply to your tattoo, I prefer to use Bepanthen (yes, the cream for nappy rash) it is cheap to buy and can be found in the baby section of supermarkets and chemists. As it starts to heal it will get itchy, but do not itch! Fight the temptation! The top layer of skin of your tattoo will come off but do not freak out, this is what is supposed to happen. Don’t rip this skin off either, let it fall off in its own time. If you scratch it off or force it off you might end up with little spots missing from your tattoo.

After about a week and it's all starting to come off, when reapplying the cream I like to gently massage it into the tattoo to help the process along. Healing can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks but really it just all depends on the size of your tattoo. You will know it is healed when the skin is no longer raised, so if you can feel the tattoo on your skin you aren’t quite finished!

I hope this has been helpful but obviously I am no expert, this is just what works for me. #flowerink
